All of this talk about Greece and its (lack?) of support from the EU vs. analogies to US redistribution of tax money comes down to a matter of degree(s) I think and our perception of the facts.

I think you are making the call that the EU should bail out Greece based on a perception or value that it is a good moral thing to do, but ignoring the fact(s) that this baling out will require Greek lenders to suffer losses (at least in the short run while they forego debt payments and maybe in the long run if the bail out fails.) This action will also bless a cultural value of ignoring what Government(s) demand of its citizens within Federations.

I on the other hand am making the call that the EU shouldn't bail out Greece (unless its citizens vote for Government that will honor its EU obligations) based on a perception that it is more important for the long term health of EU that member states have to know that their is a price to participate and to honor the contracts involved and to plan accordingly.

In both cases our personal value judgments are projected onto the political facts.

I think you would agree that at some point in their fiscal life the Greeks need to stand on their own feet. We are probably just arguing about where that point is.

I would make the same argument about the Federal Govt of the US bailing out its member states that have the ability to balance thier budgets but won't because of political/cultural reasons.

This is not the same, IMHO, when Federated Governments bail out member states because of events beyond their control. World War--World Wide depression. But in both Greece and California's case I think that facts are such that they have arrived at where they are at due to the paths they chose.

We'll just have to see what path the people of Greece and the Govts. of EU choose.
