Technology schmectology! Everyone has presumed that DVD players will take over the VCR rental business. I am a firm believer that the video stores will be around for a while, for the simple reason that DVDs can be scratched just like CDs, and that nobody really cares about the quality of the television screen unless there is some other value added. For example, with CDs you can play the songs you like in the order your want; no such added feature exists for DVDs. And how many people have bought sub-woofers to improve the sound from the VCRs? Very few, despite the fact that a sub-woofer completely changes the viewing experience. Regarding cable threats, you must watch the movie as ordered with no stops for picking up the phone or a snack, and thus there is less convenience. And who likes their cable company? Also and perhaps most importantly, most families have a video recorder using VCR tapes.

I think a reference to history is important here. Many of the video store chains have had extremely volatile histories, with prices tripling one year with a loss of that gain the next. It's the nature of the business. The business is extremely bad weather dependent. When it rains, people rent a movie. Don't let the technology threats scare you away from this business during one of its downturns. Best of luck.
