It is only a racist white fantasy that makes us think that Indians were somehow in harmony and in balance with nature. They were as greedy and bickering and drunk as any European nation. The movie Apocalypto is a good indicator.

I imagine though the Indians themselves were guilty of some 'self destructive' behavior, since, like us in many cases today, the different tribes didn't seem to get along real well.
Slavery was quite popular among a number of tribes.

I think it was Alston Chase in Playing God in Yellowstone who claimed their savagery toward each other was such that resulting buffer zones between tribes allowed most of the big game to survive.
