John, I agree with all of that. Here's what I wonder. Can a democratic system cope with a shrinking economy?

Seems like the rise of democracies coincided with the industrial age and increased prosperity for all. If the growth stops, or shrinkage sets in, is democracy doomed? Does democracy work only when the total pie is increasing?

We seem unable so far to actually cut back on any government costs. Maybe democracy just can't handle that. There's always a constituency to keep spending. No one wants to take a hit. Easier by far to. Print money.

Are there good examples of nations that were able to restructure and cut costs substantially while preserving democracy?
