"Lay down the mattress" is what attorneys do when their client is about to take a 'grande' financial fall. A little cushion when the anti-gravity wears off. Of course the attorneys themselves can go out and purchase lots of expensive new mattreses regardless, while some Mutual Fund advisors may be out selling them as a new career next year. And some folks' furniture may be limited to a mattress and some bars during the milennium, from the criminal trial.
