And why is this?

GHWB raised taxes while compromising with Senate Democrats. He was defeated by Bill Clinton for raising taxes.

Even McCain proposed raising taxes on health care benefits... something I agree with. He was defeated by Obama after Obama lambasted him on the issue.

There is a pattern where Republicans propose tax increases and are defeated by Democrats. There are no tax raising Republicans left.

As for the spending cuts. We don't want reductions in the rate of increase 5 or more years from now. The Dems do not offer year over year cuts in spending in real terms. (other than the military).
