I understand. I injured a shoulder playing Rugby when i was about 21 and it has bothered me on and off for years. A fall, a jam, some stupid act, and it is hurting again.

If you can find one, a good massage therapist who understands deep tissue therapy and trigger point therapy can do wonders for soft tissue problems. A key aspect of soft tissue injury recovery is to break up the fibrous tissue binding the tissues together. You body emits a copious amount of material (elastin-like fibers) to immobilize the injury. This is what leads to the tightness and stiffness.

After the injury has had some time to heal it is beneficial to break up these fibers. Massage is a good methodology. Deep Tissue is more intense than Swedish. (In particular cross-fiber massage is most effective) It takes some time to get used to. But a good therapist can restore mobility and reduce pain. Trigger point therapy can deal with those weird and painful points that seem to cause that deep underlying discomfort that radiates out from the injury.

A guy named Claire Davis has written a book called 'The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook;' that is available for about 15 bucks from Amazon. It is a great self help book by a guy who just found himself up against a rock and a hard place. I really like the book and recommend it often to my clients and friends. The book can be followed with the use of your hands and few soft tennis balls, but he also uses a Theracane. You can fashion a 'theracane' type implement from a tree branch if you like. Its just a forked stick that is large enough to fit over your shoulder, with one arm of the fork shorter than the other. (google lomilomi stick)

Getting mobility back is half the battle. If you get some release, start a regular workout of light stretching and weights on the injured area. You want to try and slowly strengthen the tissues and continue to increase mobility.

As we get older we all get injured or are reminded of old injuries that come back to haunt us. It takes time to keep them at bey. But it is well worth the effort.
