By giving the regular worker a (huge) lobby in Washington. AARP has about 35 million members... and congress won't screw with them. They get legislation passed on both a national and state level. The "American Association of Working People" (AAWP) could be much bigger, and much more powerful. And unlike most unions, it would include clerical and middle management.

Protection must also be right at the scene. This just happened to two of my friends in my town. They are teachers. He is a math teacher and she is a counselor. They are two of the best teachers (real smart) and finest people I have ever known.

They got in a school with a really crazy right wing tyrant principle who tried to run them out as they are both liberal. Although they very nice people and do not bring their politics into the classroom. Math teacher-lol. Anyway the harassment of the principle was so bad the math teacher was throwing up.

Another friend of mine is the head of the teachers union. He made an executive decision to tell the guy and his wife who was also being harassed to go home for the rest of the week. It was so bad both teachers quit, sold their home and land and moved back to Ohio to live with their parents.

My union friend said they could have won the fight, but my math teacher friend didn't want the fight, so he just settled for a decent evaluation and left. But without the union protection this crazy guy (everyone in town knows who he is) could have destroyed both of them and they were 10's in the teaching department and as human beings.

I spent half my life in the public sector and half in the private sector. I found the public sector had better workers and much more humane working conditions due to the union.

I found the private sector, time after time, filled with cut throat sociopaths, evil people. When I had a union I was always safe. when I did not they always took advantage of me.

50 years experience and a zillion jobs. Everything from janitor and fish cleaner to representative of the governor. I have pretty much seen it all and done most of it. 30 years of politics and 20 years of selling real estate.
