Thank you John. I won't bother to reply to that- I'll just say ditto to your post.

Come on yourself. There are always the exceptions, but they do not prove the rule. I am talking about a culture, not individuals. If you go into the hard core ghettos do you expect the same intellectual behavior you would find in a Jewish neighborhood?

I am sort of startled that you would not understand that. Tell me exactly what the southern CULTURE has done to exempilfy itself as sophisticated, or even polite? They never did get rid of segregation (100 years), the northern liberals and African American's forced them to at the point of a gun. They had horrible black chain gangs until the 1930's. They singled out the blacks and falsly arrested them and sold them to plantation owners how tortured them to death.

Where was the culture addressing these evils for a 100 years?

The majority of people in every single county in Mississippi, today, are against gay marriage and I would guess interracial marriage. That is not acceptable as it hurts too many people. My black friends used to tell me how horrible racism is. They said I could not stand it. The minorites have been hurting way too much, for way too long, for me to be polite to any culture or person who causes them to hurt. Their pain has to be considered, when deciding what needs to be addressed and how.

For whatever reason the south is very anti intellectual.
Oh, please, the list of sterling southern authors, intellectuals, playwrights, etc. could get rather long rather fast.

More nuance, please.

John, re: "Oh, please, the list of sterling southern authors, intellectuals, playwrights, etc. could get rather long rather fast."

I think a more telling question would be to ask how long the list of enlightened, intellectual southern legislators would be?

I suspect that the southern legislators reflect southern attitudes and that the south is, in fact, anti-intellectual. What result could you expect given the prevalence of rigid, faith based thinking which is anti anything that could be considered contrary to their literal and strict interpretation of the bible. That's a fine recipe for ignorance and not much of a soup for accepting scientific thinking. To the contrary, to maintain many of those beliefs requires a rejection of scientific thinking.

But don't take my view, just look at what the legislators that the southerners elect have to say about things. Those people are either lying or ignorant and they play to cheering crowds and usually compete with like thinkers for office there.

And, of course, there are amazing authors, intellectuals and great thinkers in the south but I think its pretty clear that they are the exceptions. I'm no literary expert but aren't some of the southern authors noted for their insights into ignorant, intolerant and anti-intellectual southern thinking? Ed
