A bit of positive news. Ahaha mentioned how terrible the folks at TCI are in answering questions about roll out in the silicon valley area.

I tried dialing the TCI @Home answer line (888) 407 9200 and I got a person that was a total dud. I am in Berkeley and she did not know when it would roll out, if it would roll out, etc. She was the worst possible person to have on the phone. I got pissed and eventually found a guy that was very positive and helpful. He apologized for the bad customer service person and said the calls should have been routed to him. He is at (888) 407 9200 ext 52324 and he does know more than the routine clerk. He says call him with any questions.

The main points: TCI is not strapped for cash and they are rolling out cities as fast as they can. In my area, Castro Valley is now in Beta and should be on line soon. They hope to have all of the Silicon Valley Bay Area in 1998 but will do it city by city. He stresses that the problem is that they first have to do the rewire (not a quickie job) and they then need to thoroughly beta test each city before opening it. He is very aware of the cash available to TCI in these cities. He says that damn near everyone in Fremont has signed up.

Anyhow, it restores my faith a little bit. It does not sound like TCI is ignoring @Home.

Incidentally, I think the rate at which subscribers will be signed on in 1998 is not a linear extrapolation of what we are now seeing. It is probably more exponential because you will gain cash, larger trained work force, and more demand as we go along.
