Epicure, re: "I'm no fan of redneckistan, but being not a fan, I know I'm also in no position to make wild ass guesses about where all the smartest people are. So without statistics, we're just talking prejudice here."

I have no idea how the anti-intellectual statement made by the poster morphed into the defense that no one could say "where all the smartest people are." Statements clearly meant to refer to the general tendency of a region should not be interpreted as inane attempts to paint every occupant of that region with the viewpoint of the majority there.

If, however, you're suggesting that to characterize the region we refer to as the deep south as "anti-intellectual" has to be based on "wild ass guesses about where all the smartest people are" and "prejudice" then I'm amazed.

I'll bet you could think of several pieces of information to support that thesis; polling, voting patterns, the statements of the people they elect to serve their interests....?

But if anyone wants to disagree with the thesis that the deep south is relatively more anti-intellectual than the north, west or eastern parts of our nation, I'd be happy to hear the basis for that. Ed
