I have not had that experience. I've met a lot of assholes who are republicans. I don't waste my time on them any more. Not that every liberal is my friend, but all my friends are now liberals or centrists. That doesn't mean we don't meet conservatives socially- but the people we are meeting just can't shut the fuck up about their beliefs, and they are totally rude, and seemed to feel entitled to spout off non stop about their politics- who cares what they think? And why would you do that at ecumenical social gatherings? I don't talk politics with people I don't know at social gatherings, because it's socially inept and unpleasant, but the conservatives we have met didn't get the memo on good manners. No doubt there are liberals who can't shut up too- and they, too, would be unpleasant.
