Before I went to my 50th year high school reunion, about six months before, I started a listserv for them. And we had a ball. Folk who hadn't met in a very long time, some as long as 50 years, began sharing memories, telling tales about their lives since, and so on. We even concluded we might not recognize one another so we shared photos. All on a Yahoo listserv.

Then a very right winger posted a flame. I told her not to do it again or she would be taken off. She stopped. Everyone cheered. They just wanted to talk about old times and tell stories. Just fine.

But that fell into the very convenient trope of not talking about politics and religion in certain settings.

I don't doubt there are folk who never shut up about their politics regardless of circumstances but my experience is that behavior is fairly independent of right/left politics.
