Under normal circumstances I could have bit my tongue, but I was still reeling from the shock of it and she pushed it and I felt like she was gloating. There was another Obama episode during Christmas 2008, but it was much worse and I was in her house visiting for the holiday.

Many - my wife is a Democrat. We have been married 40 years. We learned long ago not to talk politics. Her brother is a real liberal. We really cannot talk politics. One time long ago I asked him to leave as I did not think I had to listen to that crap in my house.

I've had political conversations with friends and relatives who disagree with me. Sometimes with better results than others. Talking to one sister about minimum wage (in an online conversation on Facebook that some of her friends joined in, it started as a comment to her posting something supporting much higher minimum wages) led to an interesting conversation, and to people respectfully listening to my points, even agreeing with some of them, or thinking they have learned something from the conversation.

Talking with one of my brother in laws about unions, even after I tried to limit it to public sector unions, didn't go so well.
