my minor burn happened on a sunday and i did go to a walk in clinic (even though i have insurance because i figured it would be cheaper) but it was closed....

so i went to Kaiser because they are my insurers (like i said i pay ~$700.00 per mo to them but additionally i have to pay $5400.00 for services before my insurance even kicks in.)

i feel like i was ROBBED!

Another issue is people using the ER for minor ailments,

gastrodoc,

While doing yard work, my hubby got a weird little splinter stuck in his finger. He thought nothing of it until his hand starting swelling up and throbbing. Like Lazarus, this was on a Sunday. He went to a walk-in clinic to have it checked out. He has medicare with a good PPO supplemental coverage. However, precisely because he has medicare, they would not even see him. Told him to go to the emergency room, where he got a tetanus shot and a prescription for an antibiotic.

Total bill (for 1 hour)... $1849.48
Medicare paid ................192.83
Insurance paid ..................57.33
written off ......................1599.32

Totally agree. The new Health law is a great improvement over the current disjointed situation but, as you say, does not address the over use of ER's "free" medical care (paid for by us) and the resulting over testing.
Malpractice suits cry out for a new law, eliminating frivolous suits and mandating fines for such.
