I see corporal punishment in the animal world, with mothers dealing with their pups and kittens. I'm not convinced that it's a bad thing.

I can think of a number of times when someone else's older child was acting out in public and I wished the parent would smack them so they'd shut up. No kids of my own, so, I've never faced the issue.

Or because spanking the child is an acceptable even praiseworthy item in the culture. Spare the rod and spoil the child sort of stuff. When I was growing up, everyone did it. I don't know of any parent who did not, at least no parent of a friend of mine.
