I don't know, having done business in China, this could just be one of those "it is what it is" situations where doing things by the book isn't really what it's all about.

It's possible someone at Apple screwed up...but it's not something I'd bet my own money on...

Is there ay head rolling at Apple? Who was the legal counsel when Apple bought the trademark from Proview? $60 million is small compared to the $ 120B cash that Apple has. But, it is still a charge of $ 0.06/share in this quarter. The sale of iPad in China was delayed due to the dispute with Proview. This is an opportunity cost that should also be taken into account in addition of that $ 60M.
I think that what happened is that the Taiwan Proview company misrepresented their ownership of the trademark. I don't see why anyone at Apple should be fired over that.
