I agree with your views but what should be done and what is going to be done is very likely to be different. I don't think a single payer system is likely nor is it necessary to reform the system. It will require a significent reform of the health care system and active governement involvement to force a control of costs.

I have seen no Inclination from any party, including the tea party, to do much about it. So I think WLP will around in a few years, probably will have fewer shares outstanding ( i expect them to stop the buybacks for a year or two until the debt from the AGP purchase is reduced) and higher earnings/share.

I also think we will see more mergers, especially HUM looks like it might be in play and get acquired.

Administrative costs for medicare in 2010 were 1.3% of total cost. Administrative costs and profit for private insurers are in the 20% plus range. Pretty obvious what needs to be done
Total expenditures per patient are around $10k/year for Medicare vs. about $3k/year for private insurance. Pretty obvious single payer will triple our medical costs.
