To the user, isn't it the same as the standard subsidy model? Pay $199 upfront, then a monthly rate where the carrier recoups the handset subsidy. This is more transparent, but functionally equivalent. More to the point perhaps, the subsidy model has always been essentially a financing model.

The difference with TMobile is that you have the option of paying a lower monthly fee if you choose to pay full price for a handset or bring your own device. The other carriers will charge you the same monthly rate whether you had incurred a subsidy or not.
