Your problem is to think conservative = capitalist or industrialist. I suggest you look up the meaning of the word in its proper political form. Hint - in Russia a conservative is a communist or an ultra-nationalist. ST

During the twenties and into the 60's the dems were racists and prominent progressives such as Margaret Sanger believed in eugenics. Woodrow Wilson, another progressive segregated the army. Gun Control laws were introduced by progressives to control Blacks. There are many other examples too numerous to mention. On the other hand today's conservatives are "racist" because they believe in equality, and not special treatment, Voters should identify themselves at the polls, dislike Obamacare, Believe that the country is spending itself into oblivion, etc. lj
