So what's the big deal with Cable Modems? Those are but another pipe dream as a remote access transport for many reasons. Due to the implementation costs you'll only be seeing them in a few of the higher-class areas due to the costs of conversion to the HFC transport necessary to service any fair number of subscribers and they stick to areas in which they can expect a large percentage of the potentials to be subscribers to help offset the costs. They ain't going to do it just for phone lines, and don't forget they can only serve as second lines unless they have internal battery backup features for power outage emergency access.

Cable modems operate as an open system - they're just like having a giant neighborhood LAN where anyone with a sniffer can monitor the traffic.
Corporates won't touch them.
