Maurice,

Yes.. it probably was rather cheap, but our state's probate system is pretty straight forward compared to most others.

It was just the principle of how our attorney took it upon herself to create a billable event without our permission.

You might find things move very slowly and expensively through the court system if you do it yourself. A good lawyer can get things done over the phone informally and quickly and save time and money. The trick is having a good relationship with a good lawyer that knows the ins and outs of the courthouse. A lot of lawyers don't have a clue how to register a business name let alone incorporate but will be happy to charge you ten billable hours.

What judges hate most is someone who represents himself in a courtroom setting. They know you don't understand normal day to day court procedure and things will not settle or become hopelessly bogged down in wrangling.

Not all lawyers know all the law. I know a good criminal lawyer who becomes a complete babbling moron when he has to explain something in court outside his field of expertise. I recall a judge having to explain to him what an option was after he rambled on incoherently in a cold sweat for about five minutes. The judge interjected "would it be fair to say an option was the right to buy something within a set time at a set price" his response was yes your Honour! Brilliant brilliant, I could not have said it better myself.

The best lawyers all seem to be sole practitioners.
