Have to remember that a funny thing happened on the way to the forum , when 200-300yrs later no return of the King or the Kingdom on earth manifested . When no "Kingdom Come" that was imminently predicted ever came , there had to evolve a new theology . From the apoclyptic preachings ( rantings) of Paul soon after they realized that they had gotten the 2nd coming all wrong , so had to run with the guilt ridden contamination of the flesh & persistent original sin idea and deal with being prisoners on fallen terra firma after all. Throw in demons & devils to complete the new picture that lasted a 1400 more yrs & an invisible world filled with spirits that hovered threatening every corner of their lives . Always the great motivator that all of us carrying these tainted genomes of wickedness such simple remedies as daily self flagellation & mortification of the flesh was what they imagined the heavens wanted to see . Millions suffered in abject peasantry , the worthless , inferiors, dirty , sin ridden masses . Of course to the older Hebrew there was the idea if all the criteria of sacrifices were met , one acknowledged all the rites of diet , prayer & proper celebration , one could be relatively free from Sin all obligations fulfilled . Sacrifice a few goats , keep the sabbath & all is good , don't have to beat yourself with whips or chasten others , putting on that pious show for the imaginary heaven . Trouble came when after centuries of following the rules things did not get any better but only worse , it will be like this when Saudis & the ME run out of Oil & all of a sudden Allah the merciful , is not merciful any longer . Nature wins in the end when the resources are gone & back to begging on the streets again. But by that time these fanatics will probably try to blow us (and each other )up and that assures their entry , for they get to go somewhere the atheist or non believer can't , one very great advantage of being an irrational theist .
