If it's only a religious institution, why hasn't my family (except for my brother), all Christians, gotten church weddings over the four generations that I know of? Most Christians obviously don't get married by ministers

There was a time when all marriages happened in the church. We didn't just get plopped here in 2012 without some history. There are obvious legal implications to the union of two people. That is what the government should be concerned with. However, the objections to same sex marriage isn't about the legal partnership aspect.
It is about this
"Marriage to probably a great percentage of our population is a "sacred" act. It is a sacrament in the Christian faith, very, very important to us."

By using a word that has religious connotations for a legal relationship, we have inadvertently created a situation where those who believe in the sanctity of marriage want to protect that sanctity while another group wants the equal legal rights that are guaranteed under our constitution. Neither group is wrong.
