SPOT might be better if you were to weak to phone and all you could do is squeeze a button before passing out. SPOT might give some users a false sense of confidence in presuming the country they're in even has a search and rescue. I prefer the Iridium because it does everything the SPOT does and you can reserve a room and order a pizza from it. The best back-up plan is to have someone or two people know approximately where you are and approximately when you should reappear.
