when you sign a margin agreement and trade in a type 2, or margin account, the firm has the right to use your shares to lend or hypothecate loans, its the greatest business for the brokerage firms, discount or full service... they finance the margin positions internally, or at FF, and then charge 250-300 bps over... no different in reality than a credit card loan or car loan, credit card loans are the best form of usury/wealth building for the banks, the auto loan is collateralized, where the credit card is not... however, the stock loan is collateralized and the firm HOLDS the securities, so if you don't make a call, your securities anr sold out and the firms is whole.... allowing the firm to loan your securites is part of the aggreement you signed... not much you can do other than collapsing your margin and going 100% paid securities in a cash account...

Brian,
are you in a position to use a "Straddle" strategy,
it would mitigate any further downside potential and
should cover your margin position making it less likely
to be called. Just a thought.

Brian, you can do many things.
1. Demand your congressman to investigate this matter. Trust me, at some time in the future the politicians will agree with you. Look at Mahthir M. of Malaysia!
2. You can write to SEC to abolish short-selling altogether.
3. If 1 or 2 don't work, as a general courtesy to the population, you may want to kill all the B's in the world so that there will not be any more SOB's born in the future. Trust me future generations will be thankful to you.
Man, you are so sexist! What about all the DOB's who are also shorting your love? Don't you want to kill them also? -g-
