Social darwinism or not the short term impact of socialized medicine will be the ability of politicians to leverage their political power by manipulating healthcare availability for the connected. People who can afford medical care should be allowed to purchase it with their own money. Some minimum of care should be available for those who cannot. When you try equalise the results, those who enjoy the fruits of others' labor make the system unsustainable. More and more nationalized health systems are proving to be hazardous to their citizens' heath. One result of a nationalized US healthcare system will be increased private aircraft flights to Switzerland.
