Glad you're doing OK. I hope your hospital stay wasn't too traumatic. I am repeatedly amazed and dismayed at the lack of care in hospitals. If your nurse(s) aren't really sharp, you can really get into trouble. Several times I've been in hospitals where my condition was seriously compromised by nurses who couldn't or wouldn't get an in-house doctor to come look at my problem (maybe because I'm HMO?).

I've had severe dehydration ignored for days (until I told the nurses specifically that I was now really severely dehydrated and that they should give me some IV fluids). I've had an accidentally clamped-off chest tube for 48 hours (for a lung they punctured accidentally) unnoticed by 6 different nurses (none of whom could or would get a doctor to hear my complaints about how it wasn't working right).

And after my father-in-law had quadruple bypass surgery, we saw him in a 6-bed critical care unit where the nurses were too busy to continually recalibrate the old heart and breathing monitors, so every patient had alarms going off on their monitors every 20-30 minutes, but the patients couldn't see their own monitor screens to know that their heartbeat was actually still normal.

I can't help feeling that there is something seriously wrong with a country whose economy looks so good by the numbers, but exhibits such increasing understaffing and lack of expertise in so many service areas.

Service has really gone downhill bad in the last few years. Everywhere I look it's understaffed and underqualified. Remember the days when you could speak to a qualified person on an IRS Tax help line ? Remember when you could call 555-1212 and someone always picked up immediately ? I just bought an expensive laptop, and for tech support I have a choice of two numbers - one where there are some people with no answers who can't figure out how to log onto their own computer system, and the other is a constant busy signal. Two of my sisters have clerical/accounting jobs where they are each killing themselves trying to do 3-people's worth of increasing amounts of work with no additional hires. Both have to work hours extra every night at no additional pay, and they never get ahead of the work.

What is happening ? Something isn't right.

Carolyn S.

Louis, that's terrible. Don't you know we have a rule here that you have to let us know if you are going to get sick so we can send you cards and letters. I am glad you are now recuperating. Look in your E-Mail for a card.
