I'd see them as a in a state of blissful ignorance, not knowing it could be better. . And obviously Apple isn't restricting SMS apps, because even though you find the ones that are in the App Store (such as TextFree), to be deficient, they are there. Again, that isnt a texting app, its a messaging app . Read the description, its the same thing as WhatsApp, (except its worse since it allocates you yet another number that people must use to send you a pseudo text). An easy way to tell the difference is, can you send a text message to someone who doesn't have that app without spending extra money with them? If you can't, its not a text app, its a messaging app. Or, if someone sends you a text message not from within that app, does it end up in the stock app? If so, its not a texting replacement, because now you ahve multiple places where these messages arrive.. This might seem a trivial distinction, but if you have half a dozen different WhatsApp variants, you then have have half a dozen different UIs, confusion over which one to use when sending a message to someone which might even depend what device they are on, and worse, inability to send messages to people depending what network or device they have. Example, you can send me a text or a Whats App,except if I am on my iPad, because WA doesnt run on that. I guess eventually someone will build an app that runs over all these apps and chooses which underlying network to use. Except Apple likely wont let you install that :-)
