The significance is that a) science is politicized and thus b) people are skeptical of scientists partly because c) they make predictions of doom that don't come true.

Also, if the source of your stats is the Pew study of 2009, it's really 55% Dem, 32% Independent, 6% Repub and 4% Unaffilated. I point this out knowing how much statistics mean to you.

The significance of your stats is minimal at best. Since its a study of a particular group which itself leads liberal, not a study of all scientists.

That having been said I would suspect scientists do lean liberal, just not as strongly as the stats you quote would suggest.
