Millions have been helped by private charities. To dismiss them as "go begging to churches", and only speak of the virtues of government, demonstrates the weakness of your position and hostility toward religious organizations.

I'm not surprised by your hostility toward religious institutions, it's a common theme of Obama supporters.

The last thing people in need should have to do, is go begging to a church. My god, what is the matter with your thinking? And what can the church do for a person dying of cancer or needing a hip replacement? Have a cake sale?

So you think it is better that people go begging to the government instead? How horrible that we would ask people to make some effort to aid in their own survival.

The Catholic Church in the Los Angeles area has 16 community centers where they give out free food. They also provide a variety of services from child care to elder care. They provide education services, job training, financial skills training. They provide it all for free.

In addition, the Catholic church is very involved in healthcare.
615 Catholic hospitals account for 12.5% of community hospitals in the United States, and over 15.5% of all U.S. hospital admissions.61 Catholic health care systems and hospitals are present in all 50 states.

In addition to hospitals, the Catholic health care network also includes 404 health care centers and 1,509 specialized homes.

In 20 states, Catholic health care facilities account for more than 20% of admissions.

Catholic hospitals employ over 598,934 full-time equivalent employees (FTEs).

In 2005, there were more than 15.4 million emergency room visits and more than 86 million outpatient visits in Catholic hospitals. 66

In 2005, the number of Catholic residential homes for children, or orphanages, totaled 235, serving a total of 50,264 young people.67

I'd like to see a bunch of atheists come together to form some worldwide charities. Hell, I'd like to see them come together and start a hospital and run it successfully.
