How CPQ will compete with the likes of ASND and COMS seems sheer speculation and fanciful thinking. Their purchase of Microcom will not get them anywhere near that goal.

BayWatcher,

I'm going to spin my acquisition theory some more here. First, given the timing of the Lutz interview (11/15), I believe that CPQ was deep in talks with ASND.

Second, in classifying ASND and CSCC as primary players in a RAS field in which CPQ wants to be "dominant," I think that Lutz was articulating a justification for an impending move by CPQ. (The move will have to be justified to shareholders....this was a sort of trial balloon).

Third, I think the differentiation of ASND from CSCC was telling. Just as many on this thread have said that, when you buy a share of ASND, you get CSCC for free, I think much the same concept has been conveyed by ASND mgmt to potential acquirers, including CPQ.

Fourth, as to how this will be set up: Check out tandem.com Notice that Tandem is set up as Tandem Computers, a Compaq Company. How about this: Ascend Communications, a Compaq Company. This set up may be more palatable to Ejabat et al. than total submission to an existing networker.

examining the insider selling should make you bullish and not bearish, because there is very little insider trading at these levels. try not to assume any insider trading means the stock will go lower, you need to take a look at total shares sold in reference to toal shares owned and how many were sold.

basing a whether a stock will go lower based on a small amount of insider selling, to me is not enough evidence for this conclusion. if we had massive insider selling i you can make this inference the stock will probably head lower.

but examing a chart.....

examing a chart might be more helpful currently since asnd does not have significant insider selling.

asnd has shown a pattern of:
dipping lower,
rebounding slightly,
leveling off,
then going past previous support
rebounding slightly,
leveling off
going past previous support
..... and repeating this scenerio.

if asnd holds to previous trading patterns then we shall dip below the 22 1/2 (and test the teens) level on the next sell off. noting the pattern and time frame for this, this next week would be the time frame to test new lows.

BayWatcher,
I spoke w/ an analyst last week right after they had gotten off the phone w/ the company. They are still unchanged at the $290 mil and .23 cents numbers. They said that japan was slower and that NTT was showing conservative buy patterns, but that this was offset by strong sales coming out of europe. T also started buying this quater but I can't give you any #'s on that yet. I'll talk to them just before the quiet period in december and report if there are any changes in guidance from the company.
