OWO, Please comment on the following "Proposed Standards" for the SI: 1. Free Speech should be maximized. Any legal speech is permitted, so long as affected members are freely engaged in a mutual discussion. No views should be barred from any thread, so long as they do not violate rules 2 and 3. 2. Comments attacking an individual rather than an issue or viewpoint are not tolerated. 3.. An SI member has the right not to be contacted by anyone to/about whom they are not posting and by whom they have requested not to be contacted. I must have conveyed the wrong message completely, in my earlier posts about "the Abuser". I had/have no objection to his right to RESPOND in any way he chooses... This character was spontaneously jumping into conversations and shouting epithets at them... He was (politely) asked to desist. Then he was politely asked not to contact (others on the thread); then he was requested not to contact me; then he was told in no uncertain terms not to contact me again; At the tail end of all that was another spontaneous, abusive post about manipulating the stock, etc (a stock I don't own).. My disgust was in his complete disregard for civility, violating rules two and three, not his exercise of free speech.. Update: The Webmistress apparently has contacted the offender and given him a first warning... he has toned down considerably. Am getting strong support for trying to "do something" about unsolicited, abusive posts on the SI (mao777@aol.com, folks), Also am hearing from SI members who have asked for help from SI management re:abuse, and the folks who ended up being banned from SI (Usual process: Warning; restriction from posting briefly; ban). The policy appears to translate as: "Free Speech, but no abuse" A good policy, I think.. Summary: Standards are already in existence; the standards are enforced. SI management will welcome further suggestions. So, the final question is: Do those standards need modification? If so, how... Specific comments very much appreciated (and valued) OWO!! dlo
