<<<<<So any attempt to label Romney a "fascist" just escapes me>>>>

Kind of my point. BUT you can hardly argue that the republican party embraces fascism and their leader is not a fascist. That just doesn't make any sense.

Again; As a party - or person - you can't be against government, especially a strong centralized government, and be considered fascist since they believe in the strongest of governments. The Tea Party (arguable the most right leaning bunch) doesn't want to go out and rule the world. they want to be left alone without government interference. Think Ayn Rand here.

" I'm not even certain what a "fascist" mentality would be so long as one stayed within the formal definitions."

I view that as an authoritarian conservative, ready to accept a Caesar as necessary, ready to accept brutal actions against dissenters. I saw a glimpse of it when Ari Fleisher told reporters they should "Watch what they say." in the ultra-patriotic run-up to the Iraq war. "You're with us or you're with the terrorists."

Romney a fascist? Perhaps in the sense of having government and corporations work hand-in-hand, as inseparable partners.

"Fascism should rightly be called Corporatism, as it is the merger of corporate and government power."

So any attempt to label Romney a "fascist" just escapes me. If someone wants to work with the label, fine; it's just not my conversation.
Calling Romney a fascist is just as meaningful, and just as reasonable, as calling Obama a socialist. Which is to say, not at all.

One thing Romney does have, in terms of personality traits, is that he places a high value on conformity. He has much in common with most Mormons in this regard. Conformity is certainly one of the hallmarks of fascism, but the epithet is still undeserved, in my opinion.
