Palin, W, Cheney, Dole, Kemp, GHWB, Quayle is all I can come up with, I had to look up Dole's running mate. In my old Republican nostalgia mode, I really have a soft spot for 41. I didn't like him at the time, and he was verbally maladroit, but he was a dedicated public servant and a resolute President. I still have this image of him in my mind hacking his way through a quick round of golf in the rain in Maine, after the Kuwait invasion. No doubt what was on his mind there.

But for all his experience, Poppy really should have warned W about Cheney. GHWB had to have experienced him in action somewhere along the way. I think he carried the "you got to let your kids make their own mistakes" thing too far there.

Cheney is the most obvious influence on Romney in the policy area, but aside from his largely unfavorable public image at this point, he was always a behind the scenes kind of guy.

BILL MAHER: And finally, New Rule: Republicans don't have to accept evolution, economics, climatology or human sexuality, but I just watched a week of their national convention, and I need them to admit the historical existence of George W. Bush.

Wicked but true.
