No you can't sell short in the self-directed IRA..and you
can buy puts instead of selling short but there's a time risk
...
remember all a short sell does is lock in your percent gain at
any one time..if your buy price on target company is good ..and
deal goes through..you still have a nice gain ..big arb dealers
do it because even 1% means something big to them
