I'm told that Harvey Mansfield, a Harvard professor of government, is such. I don't know his work but friends who know it, consider it first rate as a body of work.

I have read some of his work, and have heard him speak. He has done a few interesting things, but he is a Leo Straussian crank. A little like Alan Bloom, although perhaps more circumspect in his writing (not his talking, though, at least in the talk I heard). Personally, I like Michael Oakeshott better. At least, if he counts as contemporary. If Niehbuhr counts as contemporary, I'd rate him highly too, but maybe he is too "old."

I have no desire to argue with you John. I will look those fellows up. But, like you, I read a lot and I have just simply never seen a conservative philosophy I thought made sense. Never??

I have no compunction about embracing a conservative position if it makes sense. Contrary to how I might seem, I am no ideologue. I have always just looked for what I considered the best answers to forming a healthy and happy society; and I have spent a lot of my life considering those questions.

That is all I have ever cared about. I mostly just think in terms of societies needs.

As far as myself goes. I am just a flawed human like all of us, doing the best I can to get through life.

And I try to pay for my sins by being as kind as I can.
