Steve, What sunk them? If you are talking about Dell not having a sub-zero, I just finished reading somewhere on the net, that a study taken revealed that people who buy the inexpensive machines don't usually stay with the same company when buying another upgraded model. I can easily attest to that statement. So companies may be taking their chances when getting into this niche. It will take years to find out the consequences. I doubt seriously it will bring the demise of Dell over not having it, nor will it bring the demise of CPQ for having a sub-zero. These companies are much bigger than that.
