Steve,
Investor's Business Daily (11/17) reported the following US sub1K pc market share as follows (Aug '97 data);

Presario 4504 48%
Presario 2200 19%
Packard Bell 12%
Acer 4%
Tri Gem 3%

This data shows Compaq with 67% of sub 1k pc market in US at the end of August.

The 70% or so figure is correct for the sub-zero market, of which CPQ has the lion's share.

Read this for the overall retail story, it'll give you more insight about exact market segmentation => news.com

Of course altogether things are quite different, and I'll try to find something that'll give a total picture for the entire DT market - however, I'm not sure if I'll be able to spend a lot of time doing so this week.

Is the H&Q Report a quarterly thing, or do they just do one for each semester?

That would in my eyes be the best source for your query, come to think of it. I've checked their homepage, to no avail.
