Bob:
The FOOLS also seemed to ignor the concept of VALUATION both at an overall market level and at an individual stock level. When that caller asked if it was a good time to buy IOMAGA and MICROSOFT, they seemed clueless about its current real value and how you'd independantly determine such value. It think they'd fail the Moneytalk Final Exam.

I'd say those who follow the FOOL's advice on such questions would be booking passage on THE SHIP of FOOLS. By the way, their web page offers such a ticket.

Bob, you hit it right on the head when you called the Fools approach: "buy and hold for 40 years". I have heard this old saw too often. The trouble is they believe it!

When the Fools were wrapping up their show, they had a number of points of advise. One was to look at look at the stock market as a "long term" investment, not a short term "gambling game". If THEY are reading this thread, perhaps they can explain this: Why should anybody do all the market research and analysis you recommend, when you are going to hold the stock for 30 years anyway???

My former stock broker used to drone away at the same old adage. Who cares what the market is doing in the short term, we are in it for the "long term". Thank you very much, but I do not choose to have my money on the long side of any stock or mutual fund during a bear market. It is nuts.

BB has stuck his neck out about the dangerous levels we are at right now. I know he worries about valuation and the P/E ratio, and I have heard him talk about how unusually long and strong this bull market has been. He's no fool (pun intended)...and is not going going to predict a bear market when so many indicators keep saying "bull market". But BB has his game plan for a bear market in his back pocket; ready to quickly put into action when this market, like his golf game, turns south.

I'll bet the Fools quickly turn to Wizards in a bear market...they are clearly too smart to simply "wait out" a downturn. Anyone wanna bet they will be reading the MarketTimer for some solid advise?

Greg

Bob,

Your post is very interesting. I enjoy Click and Clack of Car Talk fame but I feel there is one difference. Click and Clack know what they are talking about in most cases. As a result of their actual experience and knowledge I find their humor much more appealing and actually humorous. It may also be worthwhile to note that neither of the Car Talk brothers have pursued radical career changes like the one Fool (English background turned Investment professional).

BTW, if you or anyone can explain the details of an example of a 40 year opportunity I would be interested!
