Folks like Alwaki and others are US citizens by name. They can be considered as having renounced their citizenship as well as made a mockery of our system of justice, have incited folks to overthrow our government and kill us citizens at every opportunity. That is where a civilized society draws the line and says enough is enough. Or else what distinguishes us, the law abiding, the country loving folks from the Al Awaki types? YOur logic is I think what folks say holding onto a belief to the extreme bordering on fanaticism.
