To me, one of the most transparently false statements that Romney made during the debate was something to the effect of "Private industry is always more efficient than the government."

That's not true, and Obama should have challenged the statement. There are things the private industry does well, and things the government can do well. Moreover, there are some things (highway systems) that wouldn't get done at all if not for the government.
