I was Big Oil and am Extreme Right Wing [depending on your definition of right wing] <Google software merging with the Prius software forcing more efficient driving habits and less costlier more durable and lasting lithium batteries in hybrids will change the game for good regardless of how hard big oil or the right wing attempt to stop progress. Heck we might not even need to replace the gas stations with electric charging stations or make climate change political after this. >

Contrary to popular mythology [though there was an element of truth] Big Oil is not out to stop progress.

On the contrary, we [BP Oil] used to spend huge amounts on R&D to develop anything that looked like it might be a good idea. BP Solar was big in photovoltaics decades ago. BP invested in hydrogen fusion decades ago. We even invested in sheep fat converted with methanol to tallow ester to fuel diesel trucks. BP built CNG and LPG vehicle refueling stations. I was keen on methanol made from methane. BP invested in minerals, chemicals, forests, salmon farming, embyro transplant.

Brian Baker, who was the BP refining manager in 1986 said to me "Maurice, you are talking about shutting down $billions in refineries in California". I said "Yes, and if we don't do it [in regard to methanol production] there are plenty of other companies such as DuPont which would be happy to take over the vehicle refueling business from BP. So we can shut down our refineries AND our distribution and retail facilities, or get ahead of the game." As it happened, methanol lost any chance of success because crude oil price fell from $40 a barrel to $10 a barrel.

Progress in the form of Solyndra is not progress. BP was against that sort of progress and shut down the BP Solar business in the face of Made in China extreme low pricing. BP was and is in favour of progress which is actually useful and profitable.

BP installed CNG compressors and LPG tanks at service stations. If electricity is a good thing for cars, they'll build battery swap and recharge stations at existing service stations.

I have no idea why you think we right wingers are against progress. I have always been inventing, pushing and investing in progress, very successfully I might add, while the Greenie luddite left wingers stop progress and try to bring back the stone age.

Back on the houses, maybe transport costs, safety and convenience will become so good again that Highway 15 McMansions will become more attractive. At $5 a gallon, a lot of people will be feeling the pinch.
