>> Contest median was up 43.22% YTD (vs. up 50.00% YTD a week ago). In comparison, the Nasdaq Biotech Index was up 36.16% YTD (vs. up 41.33% YTD a week ago)

Thus, the contest median is outperforming NBI by about 20-21%.

Just a guess (no data or even an attempt to look at data): But I suspect that the beta on the contest entries is far higher (more than 21% higher) than the NBI beta. IF SO, it follows that the median contest portfolio is actually under performing the NBI on a beta-adjusted basis.

In contrast, my guess is that the top contestants are outrunning even on a beta adjusted basis.

132% is hard to believe - What are the chances that is luck?

:-)

10/19/12 Contest Update
Binders of Bears materialized on Wall Street Friday morning and there was no debating their demand for equal profits.
At Friday’s close, the Contest median was especially hard hit but remains up 35.22% YTD (vs. up 43.22% YTD a week ago). In comparison, the Nasdaq Biotech Index was up 34.08% YTD (vs. up 36.16% YTD a week ago), while the Nasdaq Composite Index was up 15.37% YTD (vs. up 16.85% YTD a week ago).
RKRW’s portfolio took another beating this week but its YTD gain of 123.20% still gives it a substantial lead. DONS’ portfolio, up 76.60% YTD, held on to second place by a hair, while GENE’s portfolio, up 76.41% YTD, remained in third place.
At Friday's close, 2 of the 38 Contest portfolios continued in the red, with 21 of the 38 portfolios beating the NBI.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks ranked by % Gained and % Lost for the week.
(Foreign stock prices are not converted to US$ in the weekly and YTD Top 5 & Bottom 5 tables, when posted.)
Portfolio adjustments: None.
Enjoy a wonderful weekend biotechies!
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
