The problem with your explanation is that I have friends who like politicians on the left and on the right, and this is the only connection that causes this effect.

So, I doubt that your explanation is correct.
I'd suggest checking with Facebook about this. You'll find out what's actually going on. Instead of assuming that just because the true explanation doesn't fit in with your worldview it isn't correct.
