if I am hardwired to a router, does it need to be secure? or is it the fact that tis hardwired enough

I have the router for the wife who merely does games and email, so she does not hafta be secure, I assume

I've been told by a couple of knowledgeable computer types that Microsoft Security Essentials will be all the security I'll need. I can only hope they know what they're talking about. I was encouraged by another poster here who said in all his extensive travels he's never encountered a security problem of consequence.
