Re: PS - It would have been interesting to see opinion here if the internet was around at the dawn of SS... I'm sure many here would have lamented that it would represent 'the end of the Republic'....

That's really over the top...but I will point out that the Social Security story isn't done yet. Let us know how it worked out after the "Beast" tries to swallow the Baby Boomers.

Good luck!

And Social Security is the poster child for failed social programs. A "retirement" plan that cannot even last the full lifetime of one individual without ending up $8 Trillion in debt may not be the "end of the Republic", but it is certainly a piece of what is threatening to end it (the other piece being government-run health care plans, Medicare and Medicaid).

Social Security had laudable goals, but was structured for failure, as are all Ponzi Schemes. The first beneficiary paid in a total of $25 and received benefits totaling some $22,500 -- which should have been a clue as to what was in store.

Anyone who holds up Social Security as an example of what government does "right" simply doesn't understand the arithmetic involved.

You have raised my curiosity John. Do you believe in multiple taxation of the same income?

RE: in regard to capital gains.

My Dad, born in 1914, quit school at the age of 14 in order to support his family after his father died. He was a roughneck in the oilfields when Roosevelt was elected and later served from 1938 to 1946 in the US Marine Corps. He got his HS diploma two years after I was born. After that he was a self-employed businessman.

He thought it was a dumb idea to trust the Russians, and dumb to create a dependent society with Social Security. As far as I know, he did not get a SS check. Mom neither.
