The way some of the jokes are obscures the seriousness of it. The meaning of the binder, and why he, and still many in many places including your most liberal, is needed is because women just aren't lists given out for positions. Too often still they're an afterthought and that's often a consequence of an insular male world in high places. There might be women who have gone up the ladder in biz or politics, but lists for jobs are often drawn from "who knows who" and that has to do with personal contact (golfing, poker, nights out for a drink, etc), and shows, often, an unconscious thing with men in power to still not "see" the women around them as people to assume more power, a higher job. So when they're thinking of people for a job? People = men unless... someone drops a binder full of women on their desk.

It is still an issue, and this thing with Romney has opened it up.

An idea how to deal with it in a group of angry women? Ask why it makes them angry, and if it takes awhile to put it into good words, be patient with them, as you generally are, as shown by realizing listening and not speaking yet says you are.

I saw earlier where you thought it was silly and have been biding my time until I thought I could express why I think it isn't. My concern would be the jokes overtaking the reality of the issue that continues in terms of women and moving up the ladder more broadly. Also, though it might be worse in socially conservative groups, to put it off simply on those groups would be false and defeating for women at large.

Just another peek into the Romney 1950's sensibility. Any pol living in this century would have personally KNOWN at least several superbly qualified women. But, when he ran Bain, he didn't have ANY women in high positions.
