On Sunday, a caller asked about international investing and the fools told him that it was not necessary to allocate anything to international stocks! Their reasons being -- it is a global economy, multinationals that are based in US have revenues and earnings from all over the world,... yadda yadda yadda.

But what happened in the 70's? The US market was down while Europe did quite well. In the 80's, the US stock-market did OK while Japan was soaring. And in the 90's, Japan is in the dumps while the US stock-market is doing great.

What we have to realize is that while shocks are felt through all stock-markets of the world, the subsequent movements in each of those stock-markets are quite independent of one another. So there is a lot of merit in diversifying internationally.

Of course, it would be too much to expect the fools to know all this. Probably they were busy charging their high APR credit-cards to glory during the 70's and the 80's... :-)
