>> Well, you know I'm a big support of education being free in this country.

Well, I am going to disagree with your there MM. Being free means someone else pays the bill and also means the teachers and learning institutions can charge any price.

What's an appropriate cost for a 4 year college education? $100,000, $400,000 or $2,000,000? Who controls the costs?

The more the government makes cheap money available for education, the higher the tuition costs climb. The ultimate beneficiaries of cheap government money are the colleges and the teachers... not the student.

<<Well, you know I'm a big support of education being free in this country. It's a worthwhile investment. I wonder why Americans are not willing to pay for that out of current tax revenues, though? It seems like a no-brainer. I view education as a must have, similar to a police force.>>

Keep that thought it is right on the money.

"I wonder why Americans are not willing to pay for that out of current tax revenues, though? "

Not hard to figure out. In my lifetime testing of American Students has taken our kids from number one in the world to somewhere in the 30's I believe. This is despite the fact that on an inflation adjusted basis we spend more on education than we ever did. Clearly money is not the problem. The establishment will not face the fact that the education system in this country is not designed to educate children, but it is a jobs program for teachers.
